Fresh Talks: Zen in the Bones

Gordon Hakuun Greene Roshi has spent decades training and reflecting on shugyo — the intense physical, emotional, and spiritual training at the heart of our lineage. His teacher, Tanouye Roshi,  would translate the word “shugyo” as “spiritual self-discipline,” but in a non-Asian context, that phrase doesn’t come close to describing the intensity of effort involved. What is shugyo? How can we apply ourselves to endless repetitions, and how do we practice shugyo in older or differently abled bodies?

Commentaries on Shugyo is available in the Chosei Zen bookstore.
