Daikozen-ji welcomes Norma Ryuko Kawelokū Wong Roshi, a visiting Zen teacher from Hawaiʻi, for an evening exploring the connection between Aloha and Zen. Her talk will be followed by a Q&A. All are welcome.
Our Abbot, Gordon Greene Roshi, has spoken of how his teacher, Tanouye Roshi, ensured that his Zen training was deeply infused with training in Hawaiian spirituality. Greene Roshi described the connection between the two as the healing of separation and "knowing the unknown." He emphasized Aloha as a way of being that comes not through technique, but through direct experience—you have to soak in it.
Wong Roshi is a Native Hawaiian and Hakka Chinese lifelong resident of Hawaiʻi. She has trained in the Chozen-ji lineage for more than 40 years and is the Abbot of Anko-in, serving practice communities in Hawaiʻi, the continental U.S., and Toronto, Canada. She has spent decades applying Indigenous and Zen values to public service and community leadership in support of transformational change. She is the author of Who We Are Becoming Matters and When No Thing Works and the host of The Horizon Story podcast.
Please join us in welcoming her to Madison.
