Hara Development: A New Approach
At Chosei Zen we aim to make hara breathing accessible to everyone because of its vital importance to physical, psychological, and spiritual development. For that reason, we chose to not put this course behind a paywall. However, we welcome donations, which will support ongoing, future training at all of our dojos, and the development of courses like this.
Course One: Hara Foundations
We view hara as the intersection of the physical, psychological, spiritual and energetic dimensions of the human experience. We came to hara development through Zen training and martial arts, but it would be of interest to anyone involved in disciplines such as: qigong; yoga; weight lifting; Japanese arts; Reiki and other forms of bodywork; and many more. We made this course flexible so you can learn at your own pace, from wherever you are. If you’re just starting out you’ll find a strong foundation here. And if you’ve been at this a while, the course can help you deepen your practice.

Getting Set
Even more than learning to inhale, learning to set the hara is often a point of difficulty for students. In this video, we will discuss the set in more detail and use breathing exercises to begin developing your bodily understanding.

PMR For Setting Hara
Setting the hara involves a slight bearing down as you exhale. In this video we use PMR exercises to help you find this expanded feeling in your body.
-
Mind The Gap
Once you can exhale with a comfortable expansion in your abdomen, you can then start to explore the ‘gap’ or ‘pit’ in the upper abdomen.
-
Hara with Vowel Sounds
In this video, we’ll use a simple chanting practice to help you further expand your exhalation without creating unnecessary tension in the body.
